Tomiko Itooka, the world’s oldest person, has passed away at age 116.
She died in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, officials confirmed. Ms. Itooka was recognized by Guinness World Records in September 2024 as the oldest living person after Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera passed away at 117.
Ms. Itooka was born in May 1908, the same year the Ford Model T car debuted, and lived through major historical events, including two world wars and significant technological advancements. She managed her husband’s textile factory during World War II and lived independently after his death in 1979.
As a young student, she enjoyed volleyball and even climbed Mount Ontake, one of Japan’s tallest peaks, twice. In her later years, she loved bananas and Calpis, a popular Japanese soft drink.
Ms. Itooka was a mother of four and is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A private funeral was held with her family and friends.
Japan, known for its long-living population, recorded more than 95,000 people aged 100 or older in September 2024, with nearly 90% being women. Following Ms. Itooka’s passing, Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, also 116, is now believed to be the world’s oldest person.
