Cassius, the enormous saltwater crocodile who held the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest captive croc, has passed away in Australia at the impressive age of 110. Cassius was a colossal 5.48 meters (18 feet) long and weighed over a ton! For more than 37 years, he called the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island near Cairns, Queensland, his home.
Cassius was originally captured in Australia’s Northern Territory, where crocs are a big part of the region’s culture and tourism. He was brought to Green Island in the 1980s to live in safety, far from any human-wildlife conflicts, and became a legendary resident for tourists and crocodile fans around the world.
According to the sanctuary, Cassius had been slowing down since mid-October, and his age had finally caught up with him. In a heartfelt farewell, the sanctuary shared an old photo of Cassius in his prime, enjoying a massive meal. They noted that he was likely much older than crocodiles typically live in the wild, which made him a truly unique and cherished reptile.
Cassius’s incredible lifespan and size made him an unforgettable symbol of both the wild beauty and ancient endurance of saltwater crocodiles. Rest in peace, Cassius—you’ll be remembered as one of the greatest crocs of all time!
