The New Zealand women’s cycling team won the silver medal in the team pursuit event after leading most of the race.

The team, made up of Bryony Botha, Ally Wollaston, Emily Shearman, and Nicole Shields, performed exceptionally well in the qualifying rounds, defeating Italy in the semi-final. However, they couldn’t beat the United States in the final.

The New Zealand team was considered a favourite against the USA, but they were unable to maintain their earlier momentum and finished the race with a time of 4 minutes and 4.927 seconds, just behind the USA’s 4 minutes and 4.306 seconds. Despite the small time difference, this was the slowest of New Zealand’s three rides.

In the men’s team pursuit, New Zealand’s team, including Aaron Gate, Campbell Stewart, Keegan Hornblow, and Tom Sexton, finished in fifth place. They achieved a time of 3 minutes and 44.741 seconds, beating France by nearly three seconds. Although they didn’t win a medal, they delivered a strong performance.

Aaron Gate, one of the team members, expressed pride in their effort, even though they aimed for a higher finish. He said, “We can be proud of the effort. We went so close but were just on the wrong side of things. We left absolutely everything out on the track tonight, and we will take being fifth ranked in the world.”

Looking ahead, Gate plans to compete in the omnium event. Meanwhile, Australia claimed the gold medal in the men’s team pursuit, defeating Britain in a thrilling final.
