All Whites beaten by Portugal

June 25, 2017

The New Zealand men’s football team have been beaten four-nil by Portugal in their final match of the Confederations Cup.

The result makes it three losses from three matches in pool play.

New Zealand were well in the contest for much of their match against the world’s eighth-ranked team but were unable to score in front of 56,290 fans at Krestovsky Stadium, Russia.

Portugal striker Christiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for the European champions with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

Bernado Silva, Andre Silva and Nani also scored goals for Portugal to help them finish top of their pool on seven points.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said the scoreline didn’t reflect the intensity of the match and felt New Zealand deserved a goal.

The All Whites depart Russia tomorrow and their next fixture will be against the Solomon Islands at home in September as they look to win the final stage of OFC qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Match Details

New Zealand 0
Portugal 4 (Cristiano Ronaldo pen 33’, Bernardo Silva 37’, Andre Silva 80’, Nani 90’ + 1’)
