White Ferns start World Cup with victory

June 25, 2017

The New Zealand women’s cricket team have won their first game of the 2017 women’s Cricket World Cup.

The White Ferns cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in their opening match in England.

The Sri Lankan team batted first and looked in a good position at 141 for one with 15 overs remaining. However, a flurry of wickets meant that they only posted a score of 188 in their 50 overs.

Holly Huddleston produced a stunning second spell for the White Ferns to finish with figures of five for 35 .

New Zealand chased down the total easily, only losing one wicket.  Suzie Bates brought up a magnificent century off 107 balls, eventually finishing on 106 not out as she and Satterthwaite (78 not out) stayed well ahead of the rate to see New Zealand home with 12.2 overs to spare.

Their next game is against South Africa on Wednesday.
