Venus loses US Open final while Nadal and Stephens win

September 11, 2017

Michael Venus has fallen just short of becoming the first New Zealander to win two grand slam tennis titles in the same year.

Venus and his mixed doubles partner, Hao-Ching Chan from Taiwan, were beaten 1-6, 6-4, 8-10 by top seeds Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis in the US Open final.

Venus and Chan will share $70 thousand US dollars for finishing runners up.

The 29-year-old will now turn his attention to doubles bid to qualify for the year end ATP World Tour Finals in London.

In the other finals at the US Open, Rafael Nadal won the men’s final against Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

In the women’s final, Sloane Stephens beat Maddison Keys 6-3, 6-0 in a one sided final.
