ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Did you know that Aotearoa holds the record for the longest place name in the world? Well, it does, and guess what? It is in te reo Māori. This place is a hill near a small village called Pōrangahau in Ngāti Kahungunu. This place is called ‘Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki-maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu’. Imagine trying to write that on a letter or a map!

This place is named Taumata Hill for short, but the full name tells a story of Tamatea, a Ngāti Kahungunu tipuna, who sat on the hill and played his kōauau to his beloved.

Tamatea was known as a legendary explorer of Aotearoa. People from Ngāti Kahungunu respected him so much, that they named this area after him.

At the bottom of Taumata Hill, there is a sign, with the longest place name carved into it, that visitors can take pictures beside with their whānau and friends.

As a fun challenge, see if you and your friends can say the longest place name in one breath! Or even better, if you are in Ngāti Kahungunu, search to see if you can visit the longest place name in the world!
