New Zealand’s hopes of winning the first test match against Sri Lanka ended with a 63-run defeat on day five in Galle.

The Black Caps began the day needing 68 more runs with only two wickets left, putting pressure on Rachin Ravindra. However, he was dismissed early for 92 runs, leaving tailenders Ajaz Patel and Will O’Rourke to chase 67 runs.

Prabath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s spinner, quickly bowled out O’Rourke for zero, completing his eighth five-wicket haul in test cricket. New Zealand’s last test series win in Asia came in 2008, and they have now gone 11 series without a victory on the subcontinent.

The second test will start at the same venue on Thursday, giving New Zealand another chance to level the series.
