The Olympic Games organizers apologized for a major mistake during the opening ceremony in Paris. On Friday evening, South Korean athletes were introduced as North Korean athletes while floating down the Seine River. This error happened in both French and English announcements.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) quickly apologized for this mistake on social media. Jang Mi Ran, a South Korean official, has requested a meeting with the IOC President to discuss the incident. South Korea’s government also plans to complain to the French government.

The South Korean Olympic committee has asked the organizers to ensure such mistakes do not happen again. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams called the error “deeply regrettable” and explained that with so many things happening at once, mistakes can occur.

South Korea and North Korea have been separate countries since 1945, making this mix-up particularly sensitive. Even though the boat had the correct name for South Korea, the announcement was wrong.

A similar mistake occurred at the 2012 London Olympics when the South Korean flag was shown for a North Korean player, causing a delay in a soccer match.

Additionally, during the Paris ceremony, the Olympic flag was hoisted upside down. Adams said this was another small error in a long event and hoped everyone could move past it.

The IOC is working hard to prevent these kinds of mistakes in the future, making sure all countries are represented correctly.
