Seymour Steps In as Acting Prime Minister

For a few days this week, David Seymour has been calling the shots as New Zealand’s Acting Prime Minister! But wait—what does that even mean? Has Christopher Luxon quit? Is there a political takeover? Nope! It’s all perfectly normal.

Why Do We Have an Acting Prime Minister?

An “Acting Prime Minister” is like a substitute teacher—but for the country! When the actual Prime Minister (Christopher Luxon) is away, someone has to keep things running smoothly. Since Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters is also overseas, the job has fallen to David Seymour, leader of the ACT Party.

Think of it like a relay race. When one runner (Luxon) hands over the baton, the next (Peters) would normally take over. But if both are away, another teammate (Seymour) steps in to keep the race going.

What’s Luxon Up To?

Christopher Luxon is in Vietnam, working on trade deals to strengthen New Zealand’s economy. These kinds of trips help open doors for Kiwi businesses and bring in more opportunities for jobs and growth.

Meanwhile, Winston Peters is in the Middle East and China, meeting with leaders to discuss global relationships, security, and trade.

What Has Acting PM Seymour Been Doing?

David Seymour isn’t just keeping the Prime Minister’s seat warm—he’s been handling big topics.

One major issue he spoke about was a Chinese naval vessel moving through the Tasman Sea. He called it a “tactical error” because it has made New Zealanders more aware of global military movements. However, he confirmed that the ship had every legal right to be there.

Seymour also talked about the government’s Ka Ora, Ka Ako school lunches programme. Some kids have been getting the same meals over and over (like butter chicken 11 times in two weeks!). Seymour joked that he wouldn’t mind that much, but he acknowledged that the programme has “teething problems”—meaning it’s still working out the kinks.

When Does Luxon Return?

New Zealand’s usual Prime Minister will be back on Saturday, meaning Seymour’s time in the top job is short-lived. But stepping in as Acting PM is still an important role—it shows how government keeps working smoothly, even when leaders are away.

So, next time you hear that someone is “Acting Prime Minister,” don’t panic! It just means New Zealand is making sure the country stays on track, no matter where its leaders are in the world. 🚀
