The Ranfurly Shield, a prestigious New Zealand rugby trophy, has been accidentally broken into two pieces following the Hawke’s Bay Magpies’ 20-18 victory over Wellington in the NPC (National Provincial Championship).

Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union has confirmed that the incident was a genuine accident when a player dropped the shield onto a concrete kitchen floor.

The shield, which holds significant historical value in New Zealand rugby, was unveiled in August to replace the old one due to decades of wear and tear.

The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union has taken full responsibility for the damage and will begin the process of repair.
