Plastic bags to be gone by July 2019

December 9, 2018

Plastic bags will soon be a thing of the past in New Zealand.

The Government has announced that shopping bags under 70 microns thick will be completely phased out over the next six months.

The exact date will be confirmed when the Cabinet meets in January, but it’s likely to be by July.

A five-week consultation with the community on the ban found 92 percent of submitters in favour.

The ban will cover most plastic bags used by retailers, including some of the thicker types.
