New Zealand's first drone delivery

June 25, 2015

Delivery company Fastway Couriers has collaborated up with Sydney-based unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) company ‘Flirtey’ to create the first drone delivery service over Auckland. The corporate duo successfully trailed and tested their aerial delivery service by transporting auto parts via drone from Penrose to Mt Wellington.

While the 1.9km route usually takes 20 minutes by traditional courier (depending on traffic) the short flight takes a speedy 5 minutes to complete. The drone is build of highly competent technology meaning it uses a GPS to direct its flight path rather than man-contol. Built of carbon fibre, aluminium and printed 3D components, the drone is also very adaptable to flying in tricky weather conditions. The companies are yet to work out how much a delivery would cost.

Drone technology opens up a whole new world of courier delivery, especially in congested areas. The integrated technology even sends customers a text message notification for their delivery.

New Zealand is an ideal testing ground for the drones because of its favourable legislation and a relatively uncrowded airspace.
