New Swimming Category open for Transgender People

World Aquatics will introduce a new open category for transgender athletes at the upcoming Swimming World Cup event in Berlin.

This move follows last year’s decision by the governing body to bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s elite races. The open category will include 50m and 100m races across all swimming strokes and aims to emphasise inclusivity and diversity.

Swimmers wishing to participate in the new category will need to have an affiliation with a national federation and can compete individually, for their club, team, or as national federation members. This step is considered a pioneering pilot project, and more events could be added in the future.

The Berlin Swimming World Cup is scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 October.
