Lydia Ko had an exciting final day at the women’s golf tournament, winning the gold medal and earning a spot in the prestigious LPGA Hall of Fame.
This victory completes her collection of Olympic medals, as she previously won silver in Rio in 2016 and bronze in Tokyo three years ago. Ko started the day with a bogey but quickly turned things around with three birdies on the back nine, gaining control of the tournament.
Heading into the 13th hole, Ko held a commanding five-stroke lead. However, on the 14th hole, she hit her shot into the water and missed a putt, resulting in a double bogey. This allowed her competitors to close the gap, with German golfer Esther Henseleit finishing at 8 under par and Janet Lin of China at 7 under.
Despite challenges from top players like world No. 1 Nelly Korda, Bianca Pagdanganan, and Hannah Green, Ko remained focused. On the final hole, she played cautiously, avoiding risks and securing a birdie putt to win by one stroke. She completed the tournament with scores of 72, 67, 68, and 71 for a total of 10 under par 278.
Ko, 27, was praised for her sportsmanship and was cheered on by fans, fellow golfers, and New Zealand supporters. The win also gave her the necessary points to enter the Hall of Fame, a goal she had been pursuing all year. “I feel like Cinderella,” Ko said after her victory. “Winning gold was emotional, especially in front of my family.”
A pivotal moment for Ko was a 40-meter birdie putt on the 7th hole. “Once that went in, I felt I was on my way,” she explained. Despite the cheers from fans, Ko remained focused on finishing strong, not celebrating until the final putt was sunk.
Ko expressed her joy in achieving her Hall of Fame goal through an Olympic gold medal, saying, “This is the coolest way to do it.”
