Luke Littler, a 17-year-old from Warrington, England, has made history as the youngest world darts champion.
On a thrilling night at Alexandra Palace in London, Littler defeated three-time champion Michael van Gerwen 7-3 to claim the prestigious title and a winner’s prize of £500,000. His victory cements his place as one of Britain’s brightest sporting stars.
Littler’s journey to the top began early, throwing his first darts as an 18-month-old toddler. He became the junior world champion in 2023 and reached the world final last year at just 16. Though he lost that match, he returned stronger this year, dominating the final with an early 4-0 lead. Van Gerwen, a former teenage star himself, fought back but couldn’t stop Littler, who sealed the match in tears of joy.
“Everyone dreams of lifting this trophy,” Littler said. “I can’t believe it.” His win has brought new attention to darts, a sport that once enjoyed mainstream popularity in the 1980s.
Van Gerwen, who won his first title at 24, praised Littler, despite losing his record as the youngest champion. “Every 17 years, a star is born,” he said.
Experts are already comparing Littler to darts legend Phil Taylor, who won 16 world titles. “Luke was forged into a winner,” said three-time champion John Part. “He doesn’t feel pressure at all.”
