In 1888, the New Zealand Natives were one of Aotearoa’s first national rugby sides and played their first match against Hawke’s Bay on June 23. The Natives won the game 5-0 and later that year, they recorded their first international win against Ireland in Dublin, beating them 13-4.

All representatives of the New Zealand Natives team were supposed to have Māori whakapapa, however this rule was not strictly followed at the beginning and five non-Māori players included. This was the first team to wear the black jersey that is now All Black famous.

Now all Māori All Black representatives must have confirmed Māori whakapapa or genealogy confirmed.

Over the years, the Māori All Blacks have defeated many international sides, including the British and Irish Lions, England, and Ireland.

In 2018, the team embarked on their first tour of South America, where they played matches against Brazil and Chile.
Famous Māori All Blacks have included George Nēpia, Sid Going and Tane Norton and more recently Nehe Milner-Skudd, Piri Weepu, Hosea Gear, Cory Jane, and Aaron Smith.

The Māori All Blacks are still one of the oldest indigenous rugby teams in the world.
