Australia’s Kangaroos secured a spot in the Pacific Championship men’s final with a 22-10 victory over the New Zealand Kiwis. The match took place on Saturday in Christchurch, marking a strong performance by the Australians against a Kiwis side that is still adjusting with new players and injuries.

Although the Kiwis kept the game close, trailing by only six points with 16 minutes left, Australian’s Mitch Moses sealed the win with a long-range try, leaving New Zealand’s defence exhausted. This was a much-needed improvement for Australia after their shaky start against Tonga nine days earlier.

New Zealand had previously dominated Australia in last year’s final with a 30-0 win, but only seven players from that match were available for this game. Despite fielding a makeshift lineup, the Kiwis showed glimpses of strength, led by veteran halfback Shaun Johnson.

The Kangaroos struck first through Lindsay Collins, who sprinted 40 meters for a try after breaking through a tackle. New Zealand responded when quick passing from Isaiah Papali’i and Keano Kini set up winger Jamayne Isaako to score in the corner.

Before halftime, Australia extended their lead. Zac Lomax powered past the Kiwis’ defence to score, adding to Collins’ early try. Lomax also kicked a penalty just before the break, putting Australia ahead 12-6 at halftime.

“We’re a younger team this year, but I saw some good signs,” said Kiwis captain James Fisher-Harris. “We’ll take what we learned and get ready for Tonga next week.”

Australia will now advance to the final, while the Kiwis will look to bounce back in their upcoming clash against Tonga.
