Kiwi runner makes art while running

A Kiwi runner named Peter Mitchell has been creating digital art by using GPS to map out intricate running routes across Melbourne, Australia.

By following these routes, he “draws” designs that are tracked by an app, turning his runs into creative artworks. His unique hobby has inspired others to follow his paths, tracing designs like animals, cartoon characters, and even world maps.

Mitchell’s most recent creation, made for his 50th birthday, is a giant world map that spans 170 kilometres. It took him several nights to plan and execute, a much larger challenge than his previous works.

Over the past four years, his designs have grown more detailed and complex, starting with simple shapes and evolving into intricate outlines like Big Bird, a koala, and the Olympic emblem.

Mitchell’s routes can be tricky, as they often take him through unfamiliar suburbs and areas with unexpected obstacles. Despite these challenges, he enjoys the adventure of running these creative paths. His artwork has gained attention and inspired hundreds of people to join in, following his GPS art runs around the city.
