Kiwi ‘Bladerunner’ retires from competition

January 11, 2018

New Zealand’s double Paralympic gold medalist sprinter Liam Malone has retired from competition.

The 24 year old won two golds and a silver at the 2016 Rio Paralympics

Malone said that recent changes to the rules surrounding the artificial blades left him feeling unmotivated. He will now work on a role in the high-tech business sector.

Malone said the changes would mean he would have to start from scratch. “There’s been some changes to the Paralympics regarding the rules for the blades that we run on. That’s really going to change everything basically.”

The Nelson-raised athlete said he ultimately lacked the motivation to continue in the sport at the highest level.
