Have you ever bought a new pair of shoes and thought they were expensive? Well, think again! A pair of trainers has just broken the world record for the most expensive shoes ever sold.

The trainers in question are Air Jordan XIIIs, and they were once worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA finals. The shoes were recently sold at auction for a whopping $3.4 million NZD.

According to the company that sold the shoes, Sotheby’s, Michael Jordan gave the sneakers to a ball boy after the game as a thank-you for helping him find a lost jacket. So, these shoes are not just any ordinary pair of sneakers; they have a special story behind them.

The sale of the signed sneakers has broken the previous record for Jordan shoes. In 2021, a pair of Nike Air Ships worn by the athlete sold for $2.4 million NZD.

This sale also cements Michael Jordan’s status as the most valuable athlete when it comes to selling sportswear items at auctions.

Brahm Wachter, who is the head of streetwear and modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, said: “Today’s record-breaking result further proves that the demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to outperform and transcend all expectations.”
