The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, stopping their bid for a third straight championship.
Cooper DeJean scored a pick-six on his 22nd birthday, and the Eagles’ strong defence, led by Josh Sweat, overwhelmed Patrick Mahomes. Jalen Hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, securing the Eagles’ second Super Bowl title.
From the start, the Eagles took control. By halftime, they had built a commanding 24-0 lead. Their defence sacked Mahomes six times, the most in his career, and forced two key interceptions. DeJean’s 38-yard interception return for a touchdown set the tone early.
Mahomes, who had never lost against a Vic Fangio-led defence before, struggled against Philadelphia’s new-look unit. He managed to throw three late touchdowns, but they weren’t enough to mount a comeback. The Eagles’ defence didn’t blitz once but still kept Kansas City’s offence in check.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, once doubted by critics, celebrated his victory with a Gatorade shower before the final whistle. The win adds to his strong coaching record and cements Philadelphia as one of the league’s top teams.
While the Eagles’ victory was decisive, Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show left fans divided. Some called it one of the best performances ever, while others labeled it the worst. Lamar performed Not Like Us, which won a Grammy for Song of the Year, and brought out singer SZA for their hit All the Stars. Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson even made an appearance to introduce Lamar.
