Denmark plans to ban phones in school

Denmark is preparing to ban smartphones in schools and after-school clubs, the government announced on Tuesday.

The decision follows recommendations from a commission focused on children’s wellbeing. If the plan is approved, students will not be allowed to use mobile phones or personal tablets during lessons or breaks.

Mattias Tesfaye, Denmark’s Minister for Children and Education, explained that the goal is to improve students’ focus and mental health. The youth wellbeing commission also suggested limiting smartphone use to children aged 13 and older. Rasmus Meyer, the commission’s president, warned that smartphones could harm self-esteem and affect children’s wellbeing.

Denmark’s move comes amid growing concerns worldwide about the impact of smartphone use on students. Some schools in the UK already ban phones, though there is no national law requiring it. Meanwhile, recent research from the University of Birmingham found that banning phones in schools does not significantly impact students’ grades or wellbeing. However, Denmark believes the ban will create a better learning environment for children.
