David Liti lifts gold for New Zealand

Weightlifter David Liti has lifted a gold medal and set a new Games record in the men’s weightlifting final.
It was a superb effort from the 21-year-old who upstaged more experienced lifters on the Gold Coast.
Liti was in the bronze medal position for the 105-plus kg division after the snatch.
It then became a tight four-way race in the clean and jerk.
After failing at 226kgs, the smiling Kiwi then cleared 229kgs on his final attempt to secure the gold and set a new Games record in the process.
Nicknamed the “big bear” by New Zealand team he lifted a total of 403kg.
After the competition, Liti said he wasn’t really thinking about medalling at his first major competition and said he now wanted to go all the way with his sport.
“My coach promised me to be a world-class weightlifter so I’m still waiting, 2020 Japan, we’re coming.” he said after.
