Dame Valerie Adams, the celebrated New Zealand athletics figure, has been elected as the Chair of the World Athletics Athletes’ Commission during the inaugural meeting of its members.
Dame Valerie, a two-time Olympic shot put gold medalist and an eight-time world champion (both outdoors and indoors), is currently serving her third term on the World Athletics Athletes’ Commission.
She had previously been elected as the deputy chair in 2019. Her election solidifies her growing influence in the global athletics community. Additionally, Dame Valerie is currently serving as the Chair of the Oceania Athletics Athletes’ Commission and has previously chaired the Athletics NZ Athletes’ Commission.
Her role as the Chair of the World Athletics Athletes’ Commission also means that Dame Valerie will continue to be one of the two athlete representatives on the World Athletics Council, where both the chair and deputy chair have full voting rights in the sport’s decision-making processes
