Australian surfer Matt Formston, who is almost completely blind, made history by conquering the world’s biggest wave at Nazare, Portugal.
Diagnosed with macular dystrophy at age 5, which left him with only 3% of his vision, Formston chose to push his limits rather than be defined by them. Now 46, he is a world champion Paralympian, cyclist, and motivational speaker. His latest achievement is featured in The Blind Sea, a film that highlights how people with disabilities can achieve extraordinary things.
Nazare is known for its massive waves, some as tall as a five-story building, making it one of the most dangerous surfing spots. The giant waves are formed by an underwater canyon that causes the ocean swell to rise rapidly. Despite the risks, Formston was determined to take on this challenge. With the help of a safety team of four, he was directed through the waves using a whistle, as he cannot see clearly due to his condition.
