The All Whites triumphed over Vanuatu with an emphatic 8-1 victory at Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Friday night.

Chris Wood, captain and star striker, led the team to its largest win since 2004, bringing them closer to a long-awaited World Cup return. With goals from Matt Garbett, Elijah Just, Sarpreet Singh, Callum McCowatt, and an own goal by Vanuatu’s Brian Kaltak, the team showcased dominance in front of over 10,000 fans.

Wood’s leadership shone early when Vanuatu equalised just six minutes after the All Whites’ opening goal. Rallying his teammates, Wood scored twice in quick succession, restoring and extending New Zealand’s lead before halftime. His goals came from a corner by Liberato Cacace and a precise cross from Garbett. By the time Wood was substituted with 15 minutes left, his impact had been monumental.

The match was also a showcase for Matt Garbett, who scored the opening goal and assisted on two others, earning player-of-the-match honours. Elijah Just, Sarpreet Singh, and Callum McCowatt added to the All Whites’ tally in the second half. Vanuatu’s lone goal came from Jordy Tasip, but it was not enough to stem the New Zealand onslaught.

This victory ensures the All Whites’ place in the World Cup qualifying semifinals, scheduled for March. Their next match, against Samoa in Auckland on Monday, will finalise their group standings.

After the game, Wood expressed pride in connecting with fans, emphasising the importance of inspiring the next generation of players. His recent successes with Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League only added to his remarkable performance for the national team.
