The All Blacks rugby team faced a major change just before their departure for a tour in South Africa. Leon MacDonald, an assistant coach, has stepped down after differences of opinion with head coach Scott Robertson.
This news was confirmed by New Zealand Rugby in a statement released today.
MacDonald and Robertson had been discussing their coaching approaches for several weeks. After these discussions, they mutually decided to part ways. MacDonald had been responsible for the backs’ attack, working closely with other coaches.
Scott Hansen, who focuses on defence, and Tamati Ellison, who handles contact skills, will take over MacDonald’s responsibilities for the rest of the season. Despite the departure, there is respect for MacDonald’s contributions to New Zealand rugby, and NZR expressed hopes of having him return in the future.
Robertson acknowledged the tough decision, stating that while both he and MacDonald care deeply about the All Blacks, their differing views made it best to move forward separately. The team’s focus now shifts to their upcoming challenging matches against South Africa.
MacDonald and Robertson previously coached together at the Crusaders before MacDonald moved on to other coaching roles, including a stint with the Blues. The decision comes after the All Blacks recently bounced back from a loss to Argentina, putting them second in the Rugby Championship behind South Africa.
