A new “Great Walk” has been added to New Zealand’s famous list of scenic trails for just the second time in 30 years.

The Hump Ridge Track, located near Tuatapere in Southland, has earned this prestigious status, bringing the total number of Great Walks in Aotearoa to 11.

The 60-kilometer, three-day track offers visitors a mix of coastal views, native forests, and alpine landscapes. It also provides opportunities to spot rare wildlife, such as Hector’s dolphins, and even see the southern lights, known as the Aurora Australis. Notably, the Hump Ridge Track is the first Great Walk to be run entirely by the local community.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) upgraded the trail after years of work and several million dollars invested in improvements. According to DOC, Great Walks are high-quality tracks known for their stunning scenery and well-maintained paths that are easy to follow. Conservation Minister Tama Potaka praised the trail’s new status, saying it will benefit the region through tourism, conservation, and recreation.

To celebrate, a new Waharoa now welcomes visitors at the entrance of the trail. Aaron Fleming, a DOC director for the southern South Island, said the Hump Ridge Track was chosen in 2019 to become the next Great Walk but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fleming described the track as a unique journey through both natural and cultural heritage, with highlights including sawmilling history, scenic viaducts, and breathtaking views. He added, “It offers so much, and it really deserves this Great Walk badge.”
