The terminal at Invercargill Airport has been renamed to honour former mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt for his significant contribution to the city.
The newly named Sir Tim Shadbolt Terminal was officially unveiled during a private event. The terminal will also feature displays later this year, telling the story of Shadbolt’s many contributions to Invercargill.
Shadbolt served as mayor for eight terms, making him one of New Zealand’s longest-serving mayors. He first held the role from 1993 to 1995 and then from 1998 to 2022. In 2019, he was knighted for his services. Shadbolt expressed his gratitude for the tribute, calling it a “badge of honour” for both himself and the people of Invercargill.
The decision to rename the terminal was made by city councillors in late 2023, acknowledging Shadbolt’s work to improve the airport, including extending its runway to accommodate larger planes. Current mayor Nobby Clark said the renaming was a fitting way to honour Shadbolt’s lasting impact on the city. The airport’s chief executive also praised Shadbolt for helping shape the city and leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
