Pesky Parrots Take Over Argentinian Town

Thousands of parrots are causing problems in Hilario Ascasubi, a town on Argentina’s eastern coast.

These brightly coloured birds outnumber the people there by ten to one. They are making a mess by pooing everywhere, chewing on electrical wires, and creating noisy disturbances.

Biologists explain that the parrots are invading towns because deforestation, or the cutting down of forests, is destroying their homes. Without enough trees, the birds flock to towns in search of food, water, and shelter, especially during autumn and winter.

Residents have tried everything to scare the birds away, from loud sounds to lasers, but nothing has worked so far. In the summer, the parrots usually leave for Patagonia, a region further south, to nest on cliffs during their breeding season. For now, the town has to find ways to live with these pesky parrots.
