American actor James Earl Jones, famous for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars films, has died at the age of 93.
He passed away early Monday morning surrounded by his family, according to his agent Barry McPherson. Jones was known for his deep, powerful voice, which made characters like Darth Vader and Mufasa from The Lion King unforgettable.
Jones starred in many movies, including Field of Dreams, Coming to America, and Conan the Barbarian. He won three Tony Awards, two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2011. In 1971, he was the second Black man ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Celebrities paid tribute to Jones, with Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, writing, “RIP Dad,” with a broken heart emoji. LeVar Burton of Star Trek praised Jones, saying, “there will never be another of his particular combinations of graces.” Actor Kevin Costner, who worked with Jones on Field of Dreams, remembered his “booming voice” and “quiet strength.”
His iconic voice and talent will be remembered for generations.
