Whitebait season has officially started in South Canterbury, New Zealand, with many eager fishers heading out early on the first day of spring.
The season, which runs until October 30, began in Timaru under sunny skies and warm temperatures reaching 21.4°C.
Emily Funnell, freshwater species manager at the Department of Conservation, emphasised the importance of safety during the season. “White baiting is a cherished pastime in Aotearoa,” she said, noting that the rules help keep the activity fair and protect fish populations for the future.
Funnell reminded fishers to stay safe whether they’re on riverbanks, in the surf, or on fishing stands. She suggested wearing life jackets and wader belts and avoiding wet rocks where waves could be dangerous. She also recommended carrying two waterproof communication devices, such as a mobile phone in a waterproof bag, a VHF radio, or a distress beacon.
