Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, a star player for the New Zealand Warriors and former All Black, has decided to represent Samoa in international rugby league.

This is a significant boost for Samoan Rugby League as more Pacific Island players choose to play for their home nations. Tuivasa-Sheck, who recently returned to rugby league after a time in rugby union, informed Kiwis coach Stacey Jones that he would not be available for New Zealand’s upcoming games against Australia and Tonga.

This decision continues a trend that began in 2013 when top players like Jason Taumalolo chose to play for Tonga, making their matches highly anticipated events in international rugby league. Samoa experienced a similar rise in prominence in 2022, with stars like Jarome Luai joining the team and leading them to their first-ever World Cup final.

Tuivasa-Sheck’s experience and talent will be a significant addition to the Samoan team as they prepare for next year’s World Cup. He has played 20 tests for New Zealand but hasn’t represented the Kiwis since his time in rugby union. Coach Stacey Jones expressed his understanding and respect for Tuivasa-Sheck’s decision, emphasising the player’s desire to represent his family’s heritage.

Tuivasa-Sheck’s first opportunity to play for Samoa will be on October 27, when they face England in the United Kingdom.
