Flights in and out of Tauranga, New Zealand, were disrupted Thursday morning due to volcanic ash from Whakaari/White Island.

At least 10 flights were canceled and three were delayed after an eruption sent ash into the air, affecting flight paths.

The volcano, which has been in a minor state of eruption for weeks, emitted a large ash cloud, prompting GNS Science to investigate. By 11:30 a.m., flights had resumed, but airlines continue to monitor the situation closely.

Experts confirmed that the ash cloud reached up to 1,200 meters above sea level. Emergency authorities assured the public that there is no significant risk to those on the mainland, though people on the water are advised to stay two nautical miles away from the island.
