President Joe Biden has decided not to run for re-election, and he wants Vice-President Kamala Harris to take his place.
Many other important people in their party, the Democrats, also support Kamala Harris as their candidate. A survey by the Associated Press showed that Ms. Harris has more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win the nomination in the first round of voting.
She expressed her pride in having “broad support” and looks forward to officially accepting the nomination. However, the party still needs to vote, which might happen at a big meeting called a convention in August.
If chosen, Kamala Harris would make history. On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were inaugurated as the president and vice-president of the United States after defeating Donald Trump in the November 2020 election. This was a historic moment because Kamala Harris became the highest-ranking woman politician in US history. She is the first woman, first Black, and first South Asian-American to serve as vice-president.
In 2019, Harris ran for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination but lost to Joe Biden, who then chose her as his vice-president and running mate in the 2020 election. She has spoken out on issues such as systemic racism, police brutality, and the criminal justice system. Some people have criticized her for not doing enough to address these problems during her time as California’s attorney general. As vice-president, she has supported policies to tackle climate change and has been tasked with addressing immigration issues.
A woman of colour has never been chosen as a presidential candidate by either of the two main American political parties. Kamala Harris has already made history as the US vice-president. If she is chosen as the Democratic presidential candidate and wins, she will break even more records.
