The organizing committee for the Paris Olympics has announced backup plans for the triathlon and marathon swimming events if the Seine River is deemed unsuitable for swimming.

These events are scheduled to take place between July 30 and August 5 near the Alexander III bridge.

Recent tests have shown unsafe levels of E. coli in the Seine, raising concerns about water safety. To address this, the organizers have prepared alternative plans.

If the Seine remains unsafe, the events may be postponed by a few days. In the event of severe weather causing high bacteria levels, the triathlon could be modified to a duathlon, which would exclude the swimming portion.

For the marathon swimming event, an alternate location has been identified: the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in the greater Paris region. This venue, which already hosts rowing and canoeing events, can accommodate up to 15,000 spectators.

Despite these precautions, organizers are optimistic about the Seine’s water quality. Recent improvements have been noted, thanks to sunnier weather and warmer temperatures. Paris city hall reported that water conditions would have allowed events on seven out of nine recent days.

These backup plans ensure that the Paris Olympics can proceed smoothly, prioritizing athlete safety and maintaining the excitement of the Games.
