A lemon dating back 285 years was sold at auction in the United Kingdom for an impressive $3100 NZD.

The lemon was discovered inside a 19th-century cabinet that had been brought to Brettells Auctioneers by relatives of its late owner.

The antique lemon was found by an auction house specialist while photographing the cabinet for the upcoming sale. Tucked away in the back of a drawer, the lemon bore an inscription that read: “Given By Mr P Lu Franchini Nov 4 1739 to Miss E Baxter,” hinting at its historical significance and the story behind its preservation.

The decision to auction the lemon turned out to be a surprising success, as it garnered a high bid of $3100, astonishing the auction officials.

In an unexpected twist, the cabinet in which the lemon was found sold for a mere $40, highlighting the unique allure and value of the ancient citrus fruit.
