The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is exploring the introduction of digital driver’s licenses through a new app designed to help drivers manage their car-related administrative tasks. The digital license would be carried on individuals’ smartphones and would be optional, with physical licenses still available for those who prefer them.
The app, scheduled for launch midway through the next year, is designed to provide various services, including access to driver’s license details, vehicle registration information, and warrant of fitness (WoF) details. Over time, drivers will also be able to make payments through the app for services such as car registration, road user charges, and tolls.
The move toward digital driver’s licenses aligns with the broader trend of digitalisation and mobile applications for government services. The app aims to streamline services and provide greater convenience for New Zealand drivers, ultimately integrating various functions into one platform.
