United Nations calls for help with Libya floods

The United Nations (UN) has launched a $90 million NZD appeal to assist areas in Libya devastated by recent floods.

The powerful storm affected cities in eastern Libya, including Benghazi, Sousse, Derna, and Al-Marj, leading to dam and bridge collapses and extensive flooding.

An estimated 884,000 people have been directly impacted, and many have lost their homes and lives. International aid workers have faced challenges reaching the affected areas due to damaged roads and the country’s divided political situation.

Emergency relief efforts have begun with assistance from Turkey, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, while the UK has pledged support for both Libya and neighboring Morocco, which recently experienced an earthquake.
