Morocco has been shaken by a devastating earthquake, leaving over 2,000 people dead and many more injured.
The powerful quake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, has caused extensive damage to homes, historic sites, and communities in the North African country.
The earthquake struck with little warning, jolting people from their sleep and sending them rushing into the streets. Buildings in mountainous villages and ancient cities, which were not designed to withstand such a force, crumbled under its power.
Reports from the region reveal the magnitude of the destruction.
The historic city of Marrakech, renowned for its iconic Koutoubia Mosque and ancient red walls, also suffered damage. The extent of the destruction is yet to be fully assessed, but the 12th-century mosque, with its famous 69-meter minaret, known as the “roof of Marrakech,” was among the affected landmarks.
