Wildfires hit Hawaii

Wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui have prompted a county-wide state of emergency, leading to evacuations and significant damage to buildings.

At least 89 people have died and over 270 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. The fires have been fueled by powerful winds and have affected areas including the historic town of Lāhainā, which has suffered extensive damage.

New Zealanders who were on holiday in Maui have described the wildfires as unprecedented, with winds stronger than they have witnessed before. The US President, Joe Biden, declared a major disaster in Hawaii, allowing federal funding for recovery efforts.
