Matej Mohorič won the Tour de France’s closest ever stage finish this morning, edging Kasper Asgreen by four thousandths of a second.

Mohorič covered his face and sobbed when confirmation came that he had clinched his third ever stage win.

The Slovenian rider said that the win meant a lot to him, as it was a testament to the hard work and sacrifice that he and his teammates had put in.

Mohorič also paid tribute to his teammate Gino Mäder, who died after crashing into a ravine at the Tour de Suisse last month.

“Sometimes you feel like you don’t belong here because just everyone is so incredibly strong that you struggle to hold wheel sometimes,” Mohorič said. “You know that the guy who is pulling is suffering just as much as you do. It’s just cruel to then be able to follow the decision to attack when Kasper went.”

Mohorič’s win was a fitting tribute to Mäder, who was a talented young rider with a bright future ahead of him.

The Slovenian rider’s victory is also a reminder that even in the most competitive races, anything is possible.
