A British man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for stealing more than £31,000 (NZ$64,500) worth of Cadbury Creme Eggs.

Joby Pool, 32, was arrested in February after he used a grinder to break through a gate at an industrial park in Telford, central England, and then used a stolen truck to tow away a trailer loaded with 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs and other chocolate goods.

Pool was nicknamed the “Easter bunny” by police because of the timing of the theft, which took place just weeks before Easter.

He was arrested shortly after the theft when police stopped a vehicle on a highway. Pool gave up without a struggle and the load was recovered.

Pool pleaded guilty to theft, criminal damage and driving without insurance.
