Experts in the UK are conducting a trial to investigate the use of a new treatment involving dried poo capsules to help individuals with liver problems.
The trial, led by researchers from King’s College London, aims to improve the gut health of patients by increasing the levels of beneficial bacteria in their gut.
The capsules, filled with dried poo from healthy donors, do not have any smell or taste of poo. Around 300 patients across the country will be given these pills every three months for a period of two years. The gut microbiome, consisting of various microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and viruses, plays a vital role in digestion and nutrient absorption.
By introducing healthy bacteria from donors, researchers hope to replace the unfriendly bacteria in damaged livers and potentially improve the health of individuals with liver problems.
