The South Island ski season has begun with the opening of the lifts at Mt Hutt.

This year, Mt Hutt is celebrating its 50th anniversary with various events and a competition to win a 50-year season pass.

The opening was initially scheduled for Friday but was delayed to allow snowmakers more time to prepare the trails.

NZSki’s chief executive, Paul Anderson, expressed optimism for a successful season and anticipated a good turnout from New Zealanders, as well as strong demand from Australians.

A series of events, including performances by Dragon, are planned throughout August, with an endurance challenge requiring competitors to access the lift every hour for 50 hours.
