Paving the Way for Māori Golfers
There are few Māori in professional golf playing at a high level, however those who have, have excelled.
Michael Campbell is famous for having competed against Tiger Woods in the 2005 U.S Open, and winning, helping pave the way for Māori in golf.
Campbell grew up in Hāwera, Taranaki and is of Ngāti Ruanui and Ngā Rauru descent. He was first introduced to golf by his uncle and would practice at the Pātea golf course. He started playing in amateur international competitions in 1988, before turning professional in 1993.
Michael has been an inspiration for Māori wanting to get into golf, as Mauri-oho Stokes explains. Stokes is another Māori golfer who tried many sports growing up before ultimately finding his passion for golf. He explains how golf is an expensive sport and how this could be a barrier for Māori taking golf up, however there are opportunities such as scholarships that can remove those barriers.
Golf has taken Stokes all over the world competing, and now through coaching, he hopes to inspire more young Māori to consider it as well.
