Former US President Donald Trump has made history by becoming the first former president to be arrested and charged with breaking the law. The charges relate to business fraud and he has pleaded not guilty to 34 charges. Mr Trump is accused of falsifying records to hide money that he paid to a woman he allegedly had a relationship with.

On Tuesday, he left his home in Florida and travelled to New York where he appeared in court at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse. He looked calm and serious as he walked into the courthouse, waving at the crowd as he went in.

Inside, he sat with his legal team and listened to the charges being read out. He entered a plea of “not guilty”, which means he officially said he didn’t do what he’s accused of.

The charges against Mr Trump relate to his 2016 campaign for President, during which he’s accused of hiding payments to a woman and others in order to keep them quiet about his relationships. Prosecutors say the way he did it breaks the law. Mr Trump has denied all the charges against him, and he has returned to his home in Florida to await his trial.
