Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, has said goodbye to Parliament after 15 years in politics. She served as an MP since 2008 and was Prime Minister for over five years. Ardern gave her final speech in front of a crowded audience, reflecting on the good and tough times.
Ardern remembered her first speech in Parliament when she was only 28 years old. She said she was shocked to be there and it was an “absolute honour and privilege.” Ardern also talked about the pandemic, which was a tough experience for her personally.
Ardern’s notes from her famous press conference after the Christchurch mosque shootings will be kept in a museum. At the press conference, Ardern said, “They are us,” which became famous around the world.
Ardern may be offered a damehood, which is a special honor in New Zealand, but it’s up to her whether she accepts it or not. Ardern wrote her own story in politics and now joins the history books.
