Te Aorere Pēwhairangi, a well-known social media influencer and TV presenter on Whakaata Māori, has started a 10-day journey to walk the damaged State Highway 35 from Gisborne to Hicks Bay.

His aim is to raise awareness and funds for the communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, which devastated the East Coast regions.

Te Aorere started his hīkoi on 13th March from Kaiti and reached Whāngārā, covering 23 kilometres on the first day. His journey will take him through several towns, including Uawa/Tologa Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Ruatōrea, Tikitiki, Te Araroa, and Wharekāhika. He plans to meet with locals during his journey to see how they are coping and assist with rebuilding efforts.

While raising funds through his Givealittle page, Te Aorere also urges people to share his posts on social media to increase awareness and support. His primary goal is to raise awareness of the severity of the situation and encourage people to support the affected East Coast regions. Pēwhairangi’s whānau in Tokomaru Bay has been isolated since the cyclone, and he wants to help them and others in similar situations.
